Grounded in science and ongoing research, Lion Guardians develops innovative tech-based solutions to conservation.
- LINCThe Lion Identification Network of Collaborators (LINC) is an open, collaborative platform that helps lion researchers and conservation practitioners identify and track individual lions using a shared database and artificial intelligence. By making individual identification faster and easier, LINC allows users to match their lions with records from other organizations, helping reveal movements and connections across landscapes without the need for collars. This shared approach improves efficiency within organizations, and also strengthens collaboration, deepening our understanding of lion movements and population trends across Kenya and beyond.
- LoRaWAN & GPS collarsTracking lions is essential for understanding how they move through shared landscapes and for preventing conflict before it happens. Lion Guardians uses GPS collars to monitor selected high-risk individuals and is also testing new tools such as Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology, which allows collars to transmit location data over long distances using very little power. LoRaWAN is especially promising because it is cost-effective, reliable in remote areas, and supports continuous monitoring that improves early warning, conflict prevention, and long-term understanding of lion behaviour.
- Knowledge Sharing AppSharing knowledge is critical, especially in the context of conservation where resources are scarce. Lion Guardians has developed a knowledge-sharing app that brings together over 20 years of practical conservation experience, capturing lessons on coexistence, monitoring, and conflict mitigation, with content available in Maa to ensure accessibility and cultural relevance. The app supports staff onboarding and training for Lion Guardians, while also allowing other conservation organizations to learn from proven approaches, reducing duplication of effort and helping effective solutions spread faster.
