Recently, Lion Guardians hosted a three-day workshop at our main camp, bringing together Guardians from across the ecosystem. The workshop provided an opportunity to reconnect as a team, reflect on our shared identity, celebrate successes, and address challenges as we continue to protect lions and support coexistence between people and wildlife.

The workshop focused on strengthening organizational culture and teamwork through discussions on identity, values, accountability, leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration. Guardians worked together to identify priority challenges in their areas and co-create practical solutions, while exploring ways to strengthen communication, trust, and unity across the organization.

Working as a Lion Guardian requires more than field skills and ecological knowledge. Guardians operate in challenging environments, often making difficult decisions and responding to complex situations involving wildlife, livestock, and communities. Strong teamwork, trust, and a shared sense of purpose are essential to ensuring both personal safety and organizational effectiveness.

A central theme of the workshop was Lion Guardians’ organizational values. Together, participants reflected on the importance of honesty, trust, respect, responsibility, integrity, unity, and teamwork. These values guide how we work with one another, engage with communities, and make decisions in the field. The discussions reinforced the connection between values and culture: values represent what we believe in, while culture is how those beliefs are demonstrated through our daily actions.

As part of the workshop, Guardians reflected on how these values are expressed through their work in communities across the ecosystem.

“Lion Guardians’ values are closely connected to the values of the communities we serve. Respect is at the centre of our work, and people appreciate that we care about both their livelihoods and their wildlife. We work with communities and for communities.” — Kuyan

The workshop also highlighted the unique role that culture plays in the Lion Guardians model. From its beginning, the organization has worked alongside local communities, drawing strength from shared values of respect, responsibility, and stewardship. Participants discussed how maintaining these connections remains critical to the success of both conservation and coexistence efforts.

The workshop concluded with remarks from Executive Director Dr. Leela Hazzah, who thanked participants for their honesty, leadership, openness, and active engagement throughout the three days. She emphasized that organizational culture is built every day through behavior, trust, accountability, and leadership, and encouraged Guardians to carry these lessons back to their respective areas and continue serving as role models within Lion Guardians and the wider community.

As Lion Guardians continues to grow and evolve, maintaining a strong organizational culture remains essential. By investing in reflection, learning, and reconnection, we strengthen not only our team, but also our ability to support thriving communities and a future where people and lions continue to coexist.
